etherbound – Spring 2024

a genuine evening unforgotten / a small sense of simulation and discourse / To the quietude / we’re always
pleasantly looking down

Michael McHugh

that golden-toned boy sat ugly
nearer the edge than ever
and tossed us back an easy one

what if this was not sense?
j.b. told us not to worry.
r.b. said to worry again.

“Well, if it were—“
“No!” “Not ‘were!’”
“—sorry! If it wasn’t,

it wouldn’t be so bad
Would it? Would you
really be able to tell?”

He kept making us call him Slim and boy
when we just wanted to leave hours ago

in the meantime you
and me have all the time
in the world to think.

It couldn’t really be like Slim said, that:
“there weren’t anything left of talking no
How” We still wouldn’t believe the boy.

whispering “what did they say
about this one again? it can
always happen, you said?”

Didn’t say anything.
Aside from a pleasantry,
I’ve just been listening.

The boy let us go and we make a point
of never discussing it together.
